Palmitas, a town in Pachuca, Mexico, is the site of an incredible urban beautification project that helped turn a rough neighborhood around. The Mexican government joined forces with the youth organization Germen Crew to create a mural that would look amazing at any size, but they've done it at an unprecedented scale.
Instead of using one wall, Germen Crew used an entire hillside of walls.
The transformation from inconspicuous neighborhood to work of wonder took five months to complete.
Five months seems like a long time, but considering the scope, it's surprising it didn't take longer. Just the priming must have been a daunting task.
The mural encompasses 209 buildings in Palmitas - more than 20,000 square meters (about 65,000 square feet) of walls were painted.
In human terms, the project affects 452 familes and 1808 people, according to streetartnews.
The project unified the neighborhood, just as intended. Violence there was 'entirely eradicated', with 'several jobs created',streetartnews reports.
The rainbow depicted in the mural sums up how the many parts of the neighborhood came together to make something beautiful.
As community rehabilitation projects go, it's hard to argue with the results.
And as a work of art, it stands alone, unlike anything we've seen before.
